Striving for excellence in innovative research to identify genetic potential of indigenous livestock for improvement and conservation
International Biodiversity Day 2014 celebrated
            In order to sensitize and signify the value of livestock biodiversity, NBAGR Celebrated International Biodiversity Day on 22nd May 2014. To bring awareness amongst livestock keepers of Karnal district, about the potential benefits of A2 protein in cow milk, the bureau organized an event on occasion of Biodiversity Day. Dr. M.P. Yadav, former director IVRI, Izatnagar and former V.C. SVBPUA&T, Meerut was present as chief guest for the occasion and Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Director, CIRB, Hissar with Dr. Shakti Singh, Deputy Director, ICDP, Karnal, were present as guests of honor.
           Dr. Monika Sodhi, Principal Scientist of the Bureau made a detailed presentation about the scientific aspects, importance and functions of A2 protein in milk to the audience. Dr. Vikas Vohra, Senior Scientist informed the gathering that the team of scientists including Dr. M.S. Tantia, Dr. R.S. Kataria, Dr. M. Mukesh, Dr. S.K. Niranjan, Dr. Karanveer Singh and Dr. K.N Raja of the bureau genetically screened more than 200 indigenous and crossbred cows, for the presence of A2A2 type animals and 68 farmers were identified for having the animals with A2A2 type gene combination, these farmers belong to Munak, Kohand, Kutail, Gooda, Sheikhpura Khalsa, Angodh, Kuchpura, Bastada Dera, Gharonda, Kachhwa, Bid Narayana, Sagga, Nali Khurd and Kunjpura villages of Karnal district. Farmers were felicitated and awarded certificates on the occasion by the dignitaries. To mark the occasion an Animal Genetic Resource Exhibition was organized for the farmers by the Photo and Exhibition Unit of the Bureau. A poster competition on the theme “Livestock Diversity for Human Welfare” was held among the different college students of Karnal. Cash reward of Rs 2100/-, 1500/- and 1100 along with certificate were given to winners who were adjudged best among the participants, by a panel of experts.
           Speaking on the occasion Dr. Arjava Sharma, Director NBAGR, emphasized the need for identification and propagation of indigenous germplasm having special qualities like A2 milk. He told that milk of such indigenous cows can fetch premium prizes and quoted the examples of New Zealand. Dr. Sharma congratulated all the farmers and award winners and also complimented the team of NBAGR scientists for conducting this exercise to identify animals with A2 milk. Dr. M.P. Yadav spoke on the relevance of the Biodiversity Day, and need of preserving biodiversity among farm animals. Dr. Inderjeet Singh stressed the biodiversity and importance of buffalo as dairy animal and their contribution to livestock economy. Dr. Shakti Singh, Deputy Director, Animal Husbandry, Karnal high lightened the different schemes and services which are formulated by the A.H. department for the benefits of livestock keepers from the state and stressed the importance of vaccination among the animals.
           Dr. Sahai former director of the bureau, Mr Dhaliwal, Dr. Avtar Singh, Dr. I.D. Gupta, all scientists, technical, administrative staff, SRF, RA and students of the bureau were present in the occasion. The program was coordinated by Dr. Rekha Sharma, senior scientist and was convened by Dr. Vikas Vohra, Senior Scientist of the Bureau.
