ICAR-NBAGR is the nodal agency to characterize, conserve and utilize the native animal genetic resources of the country. The institute has a major role in characterization, utilization and conservation programs of various farm animal species such as cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, camel, horse, poultry, etc. in the country. To facilitate this, there is need to collect and store information on animal genetic resources in the context of geographical boundaries of breed habitats and administrative blocks such as districts and states. A lot of phenotypic, genomic and proteomic data is being generated on animal genetic resources in the institute. Genomic sequences have been generated for various livestock and poultry species.
To achieve various objectives of the institute, a few major instruments have been procured. These instruments are made available for use by scientists from the ICAR and other institutes in the country.
