Tecnology 2 - A Kit for Parentage Verification in Camels (Single and Double Humped- Camelus dromedarius and Camelus bactrianus)

1.Current IP Status: Complete application filed on 22nd December 2011 to Indian Patent Office, New Delhi.

2.Technology introduction and description: The present technology relates to a kit for determining parentage in camels (single and double-humped) using distinct microsatellite loci. Molecular techniques are now being applied for improvement of breeds, identifying parentage and establish the surrogacy accuracy in the breeding herds. The recent developments have led to use of DNA marker technology which provide very high accuracy. Isolated information is available for use of microsatellite markers for parentage verification in Camels which require several PCR reactions to be carried out. They utilised microsatellite multiplexes to construct a parentage testing system for camels. 12-15 PCR reactions each for son/daughter, father and mother (making a total of 36-45 PCR reactions) need to be carried out to come to conclusive parentage with high degree of accuracy. 75 heterologous origin microsatellites were evaluated for use in parentage testing in camels from different states of India where sufficient number of camels exist. The core set of 15 loci selected for the parentage verification kit can be amplified in a single multiplexed PCR reaction and are suitable for routine parentage testing. However all the microsatellite loci selected for the preparation of the kit has high PIC value, allelic richness, high heterozygosity and high exclusion probability.

3.Benefits, usefulness, problem solving, business opportunities from the technology to the Client(s):

  • This is the first kit of DNA based markers for parentage/paternity testing in camels.
  • The developed kit utilises a single multiplex PCR reaction-has 15 genetic markers.
  • The kit has a very high probability of exclusion.
  • The kit has been developed using large camel populations from all parts of the country and has performed well in amplification of DNA from vast and varied geographical locations- all markers are polymorphic and exhibit heterozygosity.
4.Prospective Client(s)/ Investors of the Technology: The clients for the technology are the farmers having camel and wish to carry out the parentage verification.

5.Expected price of the Technology: Negotiable .
