Institute Profile
The need for the establishment of an institute which can look after the characterization and conservation of Indian indigenous
livestock, was accepted in principle during 4th Five Year Plan. During 5th and 6th Five Year Plan, various government agencies
coordinated the efforts for the establishment of twin institutes in the form of National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources
(NBAGR) and National Institute of Animal Genetics (NIAG) were set up on 21st September, 1984. These institutes started at Regional
Station of National Dairy Research Institute, Bangalore. Then in 1985, both of the institutes were shifted to NDRI main campus at
Karnal and to its own campus at Makrampur, Karnal in 1994. The unification of two institutes came when both the Institute and
the Bureau were merged to function as a single unit as National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources since 1995.
